The Middle of Nowhere, but Better

Perched on the edge of yingina / The Great Lake in Tasmania’s Central Highlands, Camp Nowhere is the kind of retreat that slows your pulse from the moment you arrive. Designed for rest, reconnection, and a little adventure, it’s the perfect example of thoughtful simplicity, where nature takes the lead and comfort comes naturally.

Created by Ashley and her husband Conrad, Camp Nowhere is part design retreat, part wilderness escape. It celebrates simplicity and craftsmanship. Once a humble fisherman’s shack, it’s now a beautifully reimagined lakeside sanctuary, perfect for guests looking to unplug from the constant buzz of everyday life.

With the help of designer Sarah Andrews of Captain’s Rest fame, Ashley and Conrad transformed the shack into an intimate, design-led cabin that still honours its fishing-hut past. Original timberwork remains alongside vintage finds, flannel accents and bespoke touches that nod to Ashley’s Canadian roots.

Inside, the palette is calm and grounding. Warm wood, soft linen and occasional flashes of deep blue echo the lake beyond. The bed nook is layered with Carlotta + Gee Tobacco, Tobacco Stripe and Denim linen, creating a cosy spot to curl up by the fire.

Guests are invited to rediscover the beauty of doing nothing at all. It’s a place for slow mornings, long baths and evenings spent reading by the fire, or for exploring the surrounding UNESCO Central Plateau, where vast skies and quiet trails offer a sense of total calm.

We recently caught up with Ashley to hear more about how Camp Nowhere came to life, the story behind its off-grid charm, and what’s next for this hidden Tasmanian retreat.
1. Tell us your background story of how you decided to start this amazing location?
Conrad (husband) and I were searching for a traditional shack to do up in the Great Lake region of Tasmania as we loved the synchronicity of me being from Toronto, on the Great Lakes in Canada. This little fisherman’s shack kept popping into my real estate feed - the photos were terrible but I just had a feeling about it. We finally went to see it, saw the view of the Great Lake and made an offer that afternoon!

2. You have been featured in some fantastic media such as The Design Files - what makes you unique?
We were lucky enough to work with Sarah Andrews of Captain’s Rest fame on the design of the cabin - it’s the ultimate retreat with everything you’d want in a remote off-grid cabin. It’s got some fun Canadian touches as well with flannel and vintage flea market finds brought back from overseas. The timberwork and design are all very bespoke but we kept some original elements of the unique fishermen's shacks that define the region.

3. What can guests enjoy and experience when they come to stay?
I hope we’ve really created an off-grid retreat where guests can really let go, relax into nature and the idea of “doing nothing”. We’re all so busy, it’s incredible to have a place where you can truly switch off (mobile reception can be limited there). It might mean never leaving the cabin and just enjoying the deep bath, wood fire, games and bed nook or it might mean getting out and exploring the many beautiful walks and sights of the UNESCO Central Plateau region.

4. What is next?
We are currently focused on the Spring/Summer season and hosting all our beautiful guests - whilst sneaking up there to use it ourselves with our young daughter as much as we can! Once we’re a bit more established, I’d secretly love to find another shack to do up in the same area - they’re all so unique and I really feel the region is so beautiful and underrated. I want more people to experience it!

5. Your guests can sleep in Carlotta + Gee sheets - what is your favourite colour of our range..?
I couldn’t go past the tobacco/tobacco stripe & denim colours which fit so perfectly with the cabin decor and the beauty of the nearby Great Lake and Central Highlands bush. It’s made the bed nook even more luxurious to retreat too - especially when the woodfire is going!
