Merivale’s Design Director on creating a warm and personal home.

Merivale is known for its bold, layered and deeply considered approach to hospitality design, led by design director Nasim Köerting. That same instinct for colour, shape and form carries through to her own space on Sydney’s Bilgola Plateau, near Newport. Here, colour is used in surprising, contemporary ways, yet the home still feels lived-in, welcoming and distinctly artistic.

Nasim selected a range of Carlotta + Gee linens to complement the space, so we caught up with her to talk about the inspiration behind it, and her approach to working with homes that have good bones — but perhaps a few challenges.

Nasim, we loved being part of your feature in The Design Files - thank you. Tell us about your beautiful place?

Our home is a mid-century gem on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. We were lucky that it had great bones to begin with. I designed the space and my husband built most of it. Together we’ve created a contemporary take on mid-century architecture that still feels warm and personal.

How long have you lived there and what was the inspiration behind it?

We’ve been here for about a year now. We fell in love with the mid-century architecture of the building, and our eclectic mix of art and furniture just felt right in the space. It’s a home that reflects our love of timeless design with our collection of wonderful art and objects.

You are the Design Director of the amazing empire in Merivale - how long have you worked with them? And does this creative work come into play at your own house?

I’ve been with Merivale for almost three years, working alongside Justin and Bettina [Hemmes]. It’s incredible to be part of such ambitious, bold and creative projects. My work at Merivale has definitely made me braver with my choices at home! It has reminded me to take risks and to always create spaces that are classic but full of character.

We are so glad you are a linen lover - what is it about linen that you love?

I love its texture and how it softens over time. It has such an effortless, lived-in beauty. And of course, I love the endless colours it comes in.

We can’t wait to work together more closely on hopefully some more projects for Merivale, what other projects are you working on?

I’m really excited about Club Rose Bay that has just finished, so far it has been a hit! It was a chance to create something for the whole community to enjoy. It’s a fun, retro take on the classic RSL.

We’re also opening an accommodation project in Narooma on the South Coast of NSW. It’s nostalgic, a little bit retro, and right by the sea. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.
